My husband and I are planning to take our kids on a big vacation next summer, and we are looking to find the perfect location now. We would love to stay in a vacation lodge and are hoping to find one that will fit our family’s needs.

My husband and I have been talking about taking our two kids on a trip, so we’re trying to plan a vacation out. They don’t do well when we do a ton of driving, so we’ll definitely look into finding hotels that are close to our destinations so we don’t have too much transit time. Thanks for the great post!

And what the kids want, first and foremost, is hours and hours with mom and dad. No nanny’s, teachers, kindergarten – but mom and dad. Remember that.

We also always look for water. All kids lover water and swimming. Why not add a boat trip ? Fun for all !

Travel certainly does change once children enter the picture. We also try to avoid going out during nap times. Even though they will sometimes fall asleep in their stroller, it’s never long enough because it’s not as comfortable as their bed. We’ve quickly learned the importance of well rested children!

Thanks for your comment Charlie. I think a lot of people assume that having kids will negatively impact “their travel plans”, which is not the case (at least in our experience). Your travel style will change and the destinations you choose will change, but travel most certainly does not have to stop.

I remember my style of traveling has totally changed after I became a Mom. Now I do plan everything more meticulously. Nothing can spoil your travel like a cranky, sleepy and hungry child. When I travel with my child I usually avoid going out at the time when he prefers to sleep.

Sometimes apartments are better than hotels for this very reason, especially when kids are small – you can feed them easily when they wake up too and not worry about any mess they might make!

Some tips for traveling with kids I had to learn the hard way, but learning from mistakes and experiences is part of the process. Snacks and fun surprises have saved us on many long travel days.

Although I don’t plan to have kids any time soon, I love reading about how some couples make travelling with kids work for them. Too many people settle for one holiday a year after having kids and can’t imagine travelling too often or far with them. But it doesn’t have to be stressful, it can be enriching, right? I definitely aspire to keep travelling even after having children, will have to keep these tips in mind!

Totally agree with you on direct flights Elaine. Long travel days are tough on everyone, so the less time spent wandering around an airport terminal, the better.
