Hi Cassandra – safety, depends on the location (see my tip below!). In general, stay in a known area that is safe. If you are unsure, choose a better quality hotel for security. Avoid going out after dark. In places like Asia, if you are concerned choose a taxi in a city over a bus. If you want to go out at night, don’t wear headphone, turn on your phone’s light, stay on busy streets where there are lots of other people and families out.

I would add that confidence radiates out and other people can feel it. This is useful when meeting new people, and also in preventing unwanted advances. It’s important to know where you are going.

Europe and North America are good starting points for first-time female solo travelers.

And always ask local women what they’d do! It’s a good way to make new friends and also to fit in with the local culture.

I share similar views with Erin Pippin. I have no problems with travelling alone; however, I am concerned about my safety while travelling and would have loved to see more women speaking on the issue of safety.
This article is great and I love the fact that women are becoming braver to take on solo travelling. I just want to hear more tips on staying safe while in a foreign country.

My bigger issue with traveling alone as a young female is fearing for my safety. I’ve heard so many horror stories of women having their purses/phones/etc. stolen in other countries – or worse. I am already nervous walking alone in my city at night (for good reason). I am slightly disappointed that none of these women really touched on the safety and security of traveling alone, and would be curious to know what they would have to say about that.

Great article, nonetheless!

I did 2 weeks in Belize. 6 weeks in Eastern Europe and then at age 75>>> 8 weeks island hopping in Greece. Am I done? NO I am ready , willing, able to hit the road in 2019.

Thanks for the inspiring post. I’ve been on several trips in the last couple of years but never been on a solo trip because of fear. I like this Idea “Start small and familiar”. I think it minimizes the risk and more chances to a successful solo trip. Well, Thanks again!

Even though I do sometimes go on trips solo, I wouldn’t go just about anywhere, as there’s still quite some fear in the back of my head. But reading the women’s stories brought it all into perspective. Bookmarking this post for when I have doubts! 🙂
